The Next Gatherings... 2025; 2027

It seems everyone had such a good time at our recent reunion that they want to do it again, and soon.

Your organising executive therefore appointed a sub-committee with wide-ranging terms of reference, culminating in a motion to which there were no dissenting votes, and reported back with the following policy recommendations:

1. An annual informal lunchtime gathering

No speeches, no slide-show, no School Song. 

We will book tables, but will need to know numbers closer to the date.

Venue: the General Gordon Hotel

Sydenham railway station, Metro, buses, handy. Parking probably not good.

Claim the date: 17 October 2025, from 11:30 am.

A reminder will be sent one month before, asking for expressions of interest.

2. A Three-Year Formal (Lunchtime) Reunion

With all the usual hoop-la.

We will book the same space, but will need to know numbers well beforehand.

Venue: Oatley RSL and Community Club

Claim the date: 15 October 2027, from 11:30 am.

A reminder will be sent starting from one year before the date, asking for expressions of interest.

To What End?

I’d worked for long enough; I’ve earned my rest.

The pressure got too much so I let go.

I got fed up with too much change at work.

The game had changed; I finally said no.

I don’t do much these days; I just relax.

I take a walk, lunch with a friend then snooze.

My golf and bridge keep me quite occupied.

This is my time to do the things I choose.

My work still interests me; I want to stay.

While I still have the strength, I’ll carry on.

I won’t give up while I can still give more.

Why waste the skills I’ve built up for so long?

Though most are glad when work comes to a stop,

some opt to carry on until they drop.

Something of a Record...

Recently came across these 45’s when cleaning out a box of stuff from the old family home at Bexley that I’ve had stored for years.
I seem to remember there was trading of records amongst some of the lads.
You will notice that I seem to have obtained these shall we say cult classics from messers Freestone and O’Dea respectively. 

Not sure of the circumstances of the transaction but hopefully I didn’t part with Jimmy Little's Royal Telephone and Little Patti’s Stomping at Maroubra in exchange.

It might jog a few memory cells amongst the lads.

Parallel Paths

We started high school sixty years ago

all dressed alike; all products of that time.

If not for twists of fate or luck, I might

have chosen your career instead of mine,

or met your girl before she looked at you,

each life might have been lived some other way.

We now gaze at each other, grizzled men,

one of your lives could well have been for me.

Of course, we can’t go back to start again

but meeting up enables us to know 

how other options may have been played out

The OBU Reunion Lunch is being held again this year on Friday 25 October (2024).   

11.00am start for a 12.00 noon seating. 

The lunch is open to all STHS Old Boys from all years.  

We’d love to see you there to catch up with other Old Boys for another enjoyable afternoon! 
Again, it is at ‘Club York’; 99 York Street, Sydney, a central and great venue.  

Parking is available beneath the club building, accessed from Clarence Street or at the nearby Queen Victoria Building (QVB), accessed via York Street. Town Hall Station is a 10-minute walk away through the QVB. 

 

The cost of the lunch is $85.00 per head or for $110 in total, an STHSOBU tie will be available for you to pick up on the day. Drinks are at your own cost. 

 

The lunch will feature an update on OBU activities including the developing ‘Legacy Fund’ for assistance support of students at STHS: and OBU, school and guest speakers. 
 

A flyer with all contact, confirmation and payment details  for you to print as a reminder and send on to any other Old Boys that you are in contact with is attached. 

Please note that advance payment is required as your notification to attend indicating your leaving year.

Keith Harris, Class of 67

Just in case you were wondering...

... what Keith David Harris, STHS Class of 1967, is up to lately. Keith has been conducting Master Classes, at the beautiful and historic Schloss Zell an der Pram, Austria. This is nothing out of the ordinary for Keith, an internationally acclaimed mandolin virtuoso, teacher, composer and conductor. He gets around, and always has.

 

Later in 2024, Keith Harris will be recording a new album of his own compositions. He is not in the best of health, but that doesn't prevent him continually contributing to the world of music.

Keith Harris currently lives in Magdeburg, Germany.

Individuals are appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

(This was news to me, but old hat for some! Belated congratulations, David.)

Dear STHS Old Boy,

 

A final reminder about bookings for the OBU Reunion Lunch coming up on Friday 27 October! Open to all STHS Old Boys.

 

Bookings are preferred by this Friday 13 October to assist with planning but certainly ASAP from now. Any enquiries can be made with David Knox on 0408 208 555 or John Coleman on 0413 055 969.
