This just in from Bruce Campbell:
A bit of sad news - John Shepherd passed away. He had suffered a gangrenous leg from being a smoker and came close to losing his leg. While investigating and treating him doctors also discovered he had advanced cancer to which he succumbed recently. He was 70.
