Was going through some archived photos. This one didn't make it onto our Class of '72 Reunion slide-show but I thought I'd pass it on.
It's from the night of our 6th form farewell in November 1972. It was taken in the front yard of my place in Stoney Creek Road, Kingsgrove. The farewell was at a function centre in Railway Parade Kogarah. I can never remember if it was called the Mandalay or the Chandalay? I used the brush to comb the frizz out of my hair and the beanie to keep it from Afro-ing out. The suit has possibly been acquired by the National Trust for permanent display in the National Museum in Canberra.
A show of hands, please. How many of us NEVER owned a suit with lapels vaster than the tail-fins on a Chevrolet Impala? And a gaudy tie wide enough to wear as a loin cloth? Okay, lots are owning up, and the rest are lying.
It was definitely the Chandalay Lounge, it is now called the Kogarah R.S.L.
ReplyDeleteThe "Road to Mandalay" was a movie with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. Or, if I want to be generous, you may be thinking of the Kipling poem.
Judging from the last time we met in 2012, neither of us will need the brush for much longer,
