From Ian Pickard:
Stephen,
I have just been informed that Garry Manning passed away. I have spoken with his mother who advised that Garry passed away on 18 July at St George Hospital. The funeral has already taken place.
Ian

"All mankind is of one author, and is one volume;
when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book,
but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...
No man is an island, entire of itself... any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

1/8/2007 - Vale Garry

I remember when Garry and George and I played tennis together in a comp on Saturday mornings in the early years. As I recall Garry and I ended up in disagreement about something, no doubt something schoolboyish and foolish, and something I have long since regretted. Unfortunately after 1969 I never saw Garry again nor got to proffer an olive branch. Thanks Ian for letting us know, and please pass on to Garry's mother my sympathies

2/8/2007 - In Memorium Garry Manning

Garry Manning was a gentle soul. I remember him as a soft-spoken boy, with mild brown eyes, reserved, but friendly.
In those early rough and tumble days of Tech, when we were still sorting out our friendship groups, finding which 'mob' to hang around with, I palled up with Garry and a couple of his friends, who were among the less rowdy lads. The abundantly self-confident and ebullient types among my STHS peers awed and somewhat intimidated me - they still do, a little.
I visited Garry's home a couple of times, and he mine. I think we even went to the beach once, all four of us.
In time, I found my friendship group among STHS's musicians (self-confident and ebullient in a different manner), and drifted away from Garry. I completely lost track of him until the 2001 STHS reunion, where I spoke with him briefly. He was as quiet, as gently spoken as ever. Garry seemed unchanged, a steady, calm and steadying presence in an unstable world.
Even the briefest of friendships enriches one. I am probably the poorer for not having known Garry Manning better, but having known him at all is enough.
Garry's passing leaves me a little sadder, the sadness that comes with maturity when all around us, certain small but vital lights dim, diminish, die. Our appetites, our ambitions, our attainments... our friends.
I can be consoled by my pleasant memories of Garry Manning. He was a Good Deed in a Naughty World.
