The Song of Songs

 Dear Old Boy of Sydney Technical High School,

We are confident that you will all remember the feeling of sitting in the Auditorium with the sloping floor, listening to or singing (depending on your age) to our rousing school song, Men of Harlech.

The school is looking to incorporate two new verses to the beginning of our school song – still to the tune of Men of Harlech – to better reflect the modern Sydney Tech, and we are very keen to have our Old Boys be part of this process.

Below is a link to a YouTube clip of the London Welsh Male Choir performing the original Welsh song.  Attached to this email are the current school song words.

https://youtu.be/X0kZ6jfX9Dg

Should anybody have the time, interest and ability to rewrite the words to best fit our school in the 21st Century, we would appreciate your submission.  Our hope is that it would possibly include: -

  • our motto, Manners Makyth Man
  • our School Houses and their colours – Turner (Blue), Williams (Yellow), McMullen (Red), MacKinnon (Greg), Broome (Purple), Gotto (Orange)
  • a reflection of our esteemed and successful Alumni / Old Boys

Please send your submissions to the school via email by the end of June 2023 with the aim of it being sung by the assembled school at our Year 12 Graduation on 22 September 2023.

We also publish a newsletter, Tech Talk, each month – here is the link to the Newsletter page of our website - https://sydneytech-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/newsletter.html

Many thanks,

 Men of Harlech – Sydney Technical High School

Words by Herbert Hodge

THE WORDS WE SANG

See the Tech. High School assembling,

Floors and stairways all a-trembling,

Happy smiles, faint hearts dissembling,

As we march to school.

Trig. and mensuration,

Atomic calculation,

Homework done, or left undone,

And "Manners Makyth Man" upon our hatbands.

So regard it as your motto,

Some forget it too, in toto,

Still we voice it, voce sotto,

"Don't disgrace your school!"

THE COMPLETE SONG

See the Tech. High School assembling,

Floors and stairways all a-trembling,

Happy smiles faint hearts dissembling,

As we tramp to school.

Trig. and mensuration, Atomic calculation;

Homework done

Or left undone.

And 'Manners Makyth Man" upon our hatbands.

All regard it as our motto

Some forget it too, in toto,

Till they're cautioned, voce sotto

"Don't disgrace your School."

See us when we face the Leaving,

There's no time to spend in grieving;

All are bent upon retrieving

Time we lost last year.

Chemistry and History,

All to us a mystery;

Still we plod

Until we nod,

And face the awful paper bright and cheerful.

Some go down, and some go through it;

Some there are who live to rue it.

Masters smile and say,

"We knew it,

Now you know it, too."

See us when we're through the Uni.,

Some are wise and some are looney,

Many strong, and many puny

After years of work.

Some have gone a-mining,

Sugar some refining;

All essay

To earn their pay.

Some are building bridges o'er the Harbour.

Hydro-works for irrigation,

Dams enough to drown a nation;

Every fellow to his station,
In this world's great work.

---

Gard submitted the following:

1.

Here we are, Tech High combining,

Hearts and spirits, all aligning,

To a future bright, inclining,

Gathered now, our school.

Houses proudly naming

Those with vision framing.

Leaders they,

Who showed the way,

To make a heritage that cannot perish.

Macmullen, Mackinnon, ne’er forgot! O!

Williams, Turner, Broome, and Gotto!

‘Manners Makyth Man’ our motto.

Words that e’re inspire.

2.

When we part this institution

We shall make our contribution:

Innovation and solution,

Like our alumni.

Effort and endeavour,

Friendships kept for ever.

Minds at peak,

A sound physique,

And excellence in everything we venture.

Purple, orange, green or yellow,

Blue or red, house every fellow.

'S! T! H! S!’ hear us bellow!

Ever be our school.
